It is an allotrope of carbon where the carbon atoms are arranged in a variation of the structure face-centered cubic lattice called a diamond. The diamond is less stable than graphite, but the rate of conversion of diamond to graphite is negligible under ambient conditions. Diamond is recognized as a material with superlative physical qualities, most of whom come from strong covalent bonds between atoms. In particular, diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of all materials in bulk. These properties determine the major industrial application of diamond cutting and polishing tools.Diamond has remarkable optical properties.
